Shore United Bank Partners with Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore
Junior Achievement (JA) of the Eastern Shore has been empowering students with financial knowledge and life skills for many years. JA’s programs traditionally involve in-person lessons at many schools across the Eastern Shore and an amazing hands-on career fair where students can explore different jobs, understand how to apply their strengths, develop interview skills, and learn job-seeking best practices. Like many programs and events, JA transitioned their programs to virtual for the 2020-2021 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this added challenges, one could argue the need for sound financial knowledge and preparation for our youth to succeed is more important than ever.
Shore United Bank sponsors several JA programs each year and many of our employees eagerly look forward to volunteering in classrooms to support JA and its mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed. This year, our participation has looked a little different than years past. Instead of in-person lessons, our employees filmed video lessons for three of JA’s virtual programs, JA Our City® , JA Finance Park® and JA Inspire. JA Our City® is a program designed for 3rd grade students to help them learn the importance of money and economic exchange, and JA Finance Park® is a program to help high school students have a better understanding of finance basics to make decisions related to income, expenses, savings and credit. JA Inspire is a one-of-a-kind virtual career event for students to see what a day in the life of someone with their job looks like, how students can get that job, and what students need to do for the duration of their school career to be successful in that job.
Our sponsorship and videos contributed to JA Our City®'s first appearance in elementary schools in Accomack County, Virginia. While some of the video content is related to the geographic region it was recorded for, the videos can be a helpful resource for anyone looking to build financial knowledge.
